║ Above Board MC32 Problems ║
║ ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
NEW SIMMS NOT RECOGNIZED
For Above Board MC32 installed with ADP: If any SIMMS are bad, no
memory will be recognized. There won't be any error messages, the
memory will simply not install. Run MCATEST to determine the
misinstalled or defective SIMM.
Tech Notes: With the ADP installation, the Above Board memory counts
with the system memory when you power up the system. With the iADF
installation, the Above Board memory is reported in the Intel banner
which displays right after the system memory count.
For Above Board MC32 installed with iADF, follow these steps to rerun
the Reference diskette and change the configuration whenever you add or
remove SIMMS.
1. Boot to Reference Diskette.
2. Choose Set Configuration, Change Configuration.
3. Change the memory amount for the Above Board and press F10 to save.
MEMCHECK LOCKS UP
Customer reports indicated that this diagnostics program locked up
after running in a 16-MHz IBM Model 80 with IBM DOS 4.01. Customers
with this version of Intel software should get the latest shipping
version of the Above Board MC32 software, (which is available on the
Intel BBS). If you are experiencing this problem and the installation
isn't complete and you need to get the memory installed before the new
software arrives, you can follow these steps:
■ Reboot to the hard disk (or DOS disk)
■ Insert the Intel Setup diskette in drive A, and type A:SETUP.
The Setup program will install the initializing ADF. It's best to get
the new software.
MORE THAN 16MB OF MEMORY IN AN 80386DX-BASED PS/2 COMPUTER
CAUTION! Some programs will not work correctly with more than 16MB of
memory in the computer. If you have more than 16MB in your computer,
follow these guidelines:
■ DISK CACHES: Don't use disk caches. Not only will your data get
corrupted, your hard disk format can get destroyed as well.
■ RAM DISKS: Don't make one larger than 15MB or your data can get
corrupted. DOS VDISK is one that will not work.
■ OTHER PROGRAMS: Ask the manufacturer if the program will run
correctly in a computer with more than 16MB of RAM. Some programs
may corrupt their own data files if used with memory above 16MB.
NOTE: The latest MC32 option diskette must be used when installing
two MC32's with 8MB each in the same system. This diskette
has the software part number 302477-001A. The memory on boards
installed using this diskette will be counted along with the
system memory during boot up.
USING TWO ABOVE BOARD MC32S IN ONE SYSTEM
If you have two Above Board MC32s, each with 8M bytes, in the same
computer, you must use the current installation software which utilizes
an ADP (Adapter Description Program) to initilize the Above Board MC32
instead of the old IADF (Initializing Adapter Description File). With
the ADP installation, the Above Board MC32 memory is counted with the
system board memory on power up. The older installation method where
the memory on the Above Board MC32 was reported on an IADF banner just
after the system board memory counted won't allow two fully populated
Above Board MC32s.
NOTE Some programs may malfunction with more than 16MB of
memory on a computer.
111 ERROR ON A NEWER MOD 70
If you experience 111 errors on boot or after loading a program that
uses the Above Board MC32, your computer may not be compatible with the
original MC32 board. Check the location of the system board SIMM
sockets. If your system board is the newer design, the SIMM sockets
will be under the hard disk.
Intel has identified and fixed the problem with a modification to the
MC32 board. The new Above Board MC32s have a manufacturing code which
ends in 002 or higher. The manufacturing code is on a small, white
sticker to the right of the serial number. Call Intel Customer Support
if you have questions or need assistance.
SYS 1198 ERROR MESSAGE
This error can occur when the ILIM386.SYS command is in the CONFIG.SYS
file for OS\2. You must remove the iLIM386.SYS command. Both OS\2 and
ILIM386 are memory managers, and they can't co-exist in the same
computer.
"DOS 123 ERROR: PROTECTED MODE REQUIRES VCPI WITHIN VIRTUAL 8086"
This error message is produced with an Above Board MC32, ILIM386.SYS
version 4.04, and software designed to conform to the Virtual Control
Program Interface (VCPI) specification. ILIM386.SYS version 4.07 does
not have this problem.
Although ILIM386.SYS version 4.04 was designed to conform with software
using the VCPI specification, a problem with the ILIM VCPI
implementation causes Lotus 1-2-3 Release 3 to hang with the message:
"DOS 123 ERROR: Protected mode requires VCPI within virtual 8086".
"TOO MUCH EXTENDED MEMORY" ERROR
This error occurs when Above Board MC32 ADP installation software is
used on a system in which an MC32 was previously installed. If the
previous MC32 was installed using the iADF installation software but
was never completely uninstalled, an error will be returned stating
that there is too much extended memory.
The solution is to completely uninstall the MC32 using the iADF
software, then reinstall using the ADP software.
IBM ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS AND THE MC32
Be careful in running the memory diagnostics from the reference
diskette of a Model 70 or 80 when the Above Board MC32 is installed.
The standard tests on the main menus will work fine, but the advanced
diagnostics on a hidden menu will cause problems. You activate these
advanced diagnostics using the Ctrl-A command. Do not run these memory
tests! We're telling you the command only so you know never to use it.
The problem arises because these tests only see IBM memory. Since they
don't see the MC32 (or any other add-in board) the program remaps the
IBM memory right on top of the MC32, thus creating a conflict. The
next time you reboot, you'll get a 164 error. You may also see a
message that says the system board is bad.
To fix the problem, boot to the Reference diskette. Select Set
Configuration then Change Configuration. Verify the Above Board MC32
information, then hit the F10 key to save. Reboot to the hard disk and
there should be no error messages.
